With organizations moving towards cloud-hosted business applications, demand for IT professionals possessing the transitioning and administering expertise is on the highest. Security concerns also tend to pose difficulty on the decision makers. Due to increased instances of cyber attacks and ransomware infections, a business is always prone to risks and threats. Considering the security concerns, Microsoft has introduced several security features and capabilities to make Office 365 more secure and prepare the organizations for protection against risks of intrusion and accidental data loss.
Need for Enhanced security features
Earlier Microsoft office 365 security front was being catered through Office 365 Exchange Online Protection (EOP). The EOP being signature-based antimalware product targets the messages with known signatures to identify spam, phishing, virus etc. and deliver the utmost protection. Microsoft felt the need to add on security features as EOP was not enough to safeguard against the new attacking trends.
To address this gap, Microsoft offers the following security enhancement capabilities to Microsoft Office 365 users:

It releases a score, considering the implemented security configuration and features. This feature helps administrators to understand current Microsoft Office 365 robust security configuration and demonstrates how additional controls can help in enhancing the overall security. Secure Score improves the security infrastructure of an organization and minimizes the risk of being hacked or suffer from a data breach.
  • Office 365 Threat Intelligence: Threat Intelligence feature facilitates Office 365 global administrators and security administrators to monitor, understand and prevent attacks against the organization. It extracts and uses data from Microsoft Intelligent Security Graph to have actionable insights and global attack trends. Office 365 threat intelligence security feature includes threat dashboard, threat explorer, incidents for powerful and accurate data analysis for organizational security infrastructure.
  • Office 365 Advanced Data Governance: The Advanced Data Governance feature of Office 365 uses machine learning to help to identify and retain the crucial data and shreds redundant and obsolete data that might pose risk to the organization.  It offers policy recommendations along with data classifications to assist customers and users to analyze and initiate necessary action on the data.
